What is Phonetics?

A simple definition of phonetics is that phonetics is physical pronunciation.

Phonetics  = the physical part of making letter sounds.

Making musical sounds can also be physical.

How do we make musical sounds with a flute?

To make musical sounds with a flute we must physically control the movement, direction, pressure, and volume of air through the flute.

Phonetic pronunciation is the same. To make language sounds we must use our articulators to physically control the movement, direction, pressure, and volume of air up from our lungs and out through our vocal tract.
